If the protection functionalities have not been considered as part of the unit certification, a component certificate may be required for the grid protection of power generating units, depending on country-specific grid code requirements. In the German market e.g. this is often the case for protection devices installed as intermediate protection in photovoltaic parks, since the protection settings are not made on the inverters, but as a grid and plant protection installed on the undervoltage side of the machine transformer.
